Where’s Your Focus?

How would you describe the quality of your life right now? Is it satisfying, positive and fulfilling or painful, difficult and discouraging?

Perception is reality

No one can deny that life can serve up some pretty harsh challenges. However, your quality of life isn’t based on circumstances as much as it is on what you choose to focus on. There are many things in life that we can’t control, but the good news is that we can control what we choose to think about. You see, what you focus on becomes your reality. Every day, it is your focus that influences what you feel, see and experience.

Begin Today to Become Your Best Self

Best SelfIt was a little odd having Easter and April Fool’s Day fall on the same day this year. Those dates haven’t lined up since 1945, so it’s a rare occurrence! I wonder how many people added a few tricks to their egg hunts? I heard one person’s idea was to cover raw eggs with chocolate so their friends would take a bite. Not exactly my idea of tasteful  joke!

But regardless of what strange things are happening, this time of year is a special reminder that life offers new beginnings. Every day brings an opportunity to experience life in a new way, and you have the power to make some healthy changes to put yourself on the road to being your best self.

Have You Cast Your Vision for 2016?

casting your vision

And so, in the blink of an eye, we are beginning a new year – welcome to 2016! The future is before us, which gets me thinking about where I want to be by this time next year – and beyond. You may be thinking about that, too.

When you look at your hopes and dreams for the future – where you want to be at some defined point in time – what do you see? Is the road pretty clear before you or is the fog too thick? Of course, no one has the power to fully predict their future, but those who cast a vision and do whatever it takes to achieve it have a better chance of predictable success and satisfaction as they look back from the vantage point of old age.

Casting a vision for your life simply means to decide what you ultimately want to do, have, and accomplish in life. The following excerpt from our audio presentation, “The Power of Values” will give you a great start on casting a vision for your future.

Many people today know what they don’t want in life, but they can’t fully identify what they do want. Moreover, even if they knew what they wanted they too often couldn’t identify how to get there. Some of the questions you will want to answer for yourself as you develop a vision for your own life will include:

You Reap What You Sow

From the earliest writings, wise humans have found ways to express this fundamental truth: You reap what you sow.  While this cannot be taken as a promise for every individual experience you have, you can count on it to play out in the grand scheme of your life.

You Reap What You Sow

It stands to reason that if you plant a seed for a geranium, you’re going to produce a geranium. If you plant poison ivy, you better stock up on anti-itch cream. It’s no different with your choices, attitudes, habits and behaviors.

It can be surprising to find that some people can’t see the connection between what they say or do and the results they get. Marriages can be negatively impacted when a husband speaks harshly or critically to his wife and then is angry when she is not affectionate with him. Or when a wife criticizes her husband in front of the children or friends, and then has no understanding of why he prefers to work late instead of coming home. Sometimes, we can be blind to the obvious.

VALUES: Why Passing on A Life Compass Matters

In my last blog, I wrote about the importance of values, especially related to how we can influence our children and other important people in our lives.  Today I want to get a little more specific about why having values and imparting them to others is so helpful and also suggest some practical ways you can do it.

First, here is a breakdown of the benefits:

The Attitude of Gratitude: How to make your life better every day!

I hope you’re reading this with the smell of turkey and pumpkin pie in the air. Thanksgiving is one of the things I am thankful for, because it gives us an opportunity to consider everything we have that inspires an attitude of gratitude.

Attitude of GratitudeIn my last blog, I shared the Happiness Formula, and the research showed that some of our tendency to be naturally positive or negative is simply an inborn part of who we are.  However, we also found that almost half of the influence comes from what we choose to do.  I am thankful for that, because it means we can all intentionally find things to be grateful for and improve our outlook on life.

I came across this list of blessings on the web, and though you may have seen it, it bears repeating at this time of year.

The Secret to a Better Life Lies In Simple Arithmetic

Do you like everything about your life just the way it is? If so, you can stop reading now. If not, what is it you don’t like or are unhappy with? You see, if you can identify what you don’t like with your life you can do one of two very simple things to make it a better life – either add or subtract.

Simple Arithmetic = A Better Life

The Principle of Addition and Subtraction

This wisdom associated with the Principle of Addition and Subtraction is revealed in the following statement, “If you always do what you have always done you will always get what you have always got.” In other words, if there are things in your life that cause you pain you have to introduce something new or different in order to experience relief. If you are struggling with your children, marriage, finances, career, communication, health, friendships, etc., something must either be added to, or subtracted from your life in order to experience different, and ideally, desirable results.
